Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the many ways in which different cultures and communities perceive knowledge, and thus uncertainty. Much of the research and writing of this book took place in land that some refer to as Australia, on the unceded lands of the Boonwurrung/Bunurong and Wurundjeri peoples of the Kulin nation and of the Whadjuk peoples of the Noongar Nation. These lands are sacred, and we acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples – including our co-authors. We also have authors on the traditional lands of the Haudenoshee, the Anishnawabe, the Wendat and the Mississaugas of the Credit (in the land some refer to as Canada) and acknowledge ongoing stewardship of these lands for thousands of years.

We acknowledge that many of the authors of this book are occupiers, either born in or migrating to Australia or Canada. We acknowledge that many of us come from a history of occupiers who have yet to reconcile with the people or land we have occupied.  We stand in solidarity with Indigenous and First Nations peoples of our respective Countries and the world.
