76 Updating models of change activity

In the section Updating models of change, I set down four ways physiotherapy is responding to the challenges posed by post-professionalism. In this activity we’ll look at which of these approaches is most prevalent in your work locality and explore what this might mean for your work today and tomorrow.

Activity

  1. Reread Table 1 in the section Updating models of change, and use this table below to add your own perspective.
  2. In the section on Examples from your work try to think of specific instances where you have seen these strategies played out. For instance in the Doing nothing box you might write “Lack of direction from professional body”, or “Can’t find anything in the literature to suggest people are taking this seriously”. Whatever reflects your experience. Make these personal and really specific.
  3. In the Reflections box write down how are you personally feel about this: whether you’re happy that the profession is taking this approach or whether it frustrates you. Try to pin down why you feel this way. Also, perhaps add some actions that could be taken to improve things?
  4. As with early activities, this can be done on your own or, even better, with a group of trusted colleagues.

There’s a word version of the table here for you to download if you want it.

Strategy Why might this appeal? Examples from your work Reflections
Doing nothing Watching and waiting, not rushing into quick fixes, places trust in our heritage, not seen by others as being reactive and hasty.
Modern heritage Returning to the body-as machine, a very familiar professional identity with a long history in physiotherapy, easy to teach and market.
Renaissance Rejecting the body-as machine entirely, rebuilding physiotherapy from the bottom up, radical and contemporary but a big departure from tradition.
Hybrid The best of the old combined with the best of the new, all encompassing and comprehensive, but confused philosophy, unclear boundaries.
