Gastroscopy

Endoscope introduced under direct vision through the mouth and advanced to the third part of the duodenum. Ten biopsy specimens collected for histology. The patient tolerated the procedure well.

Findings

Oesophagus: Minor signs of reflux oesophagitis, 2x biopsy samples collected from LES

Stomach: Normal stomach.

Duodenum: Mucosal scalloping noted throughout examined portions. Nil ulcers or polyps noted. 8x biopsy samples collected.

Histology report: Oesophageal samples show basal cell layer hyperplasia, with sparse eosinophils and lymphocyte infiltrate within mucosa, likely due to mild reflux oesophagitis.

Duodenal samples show total villous atrophy, increased intraepithelial lymphocytes, and crypt hyperplasia, strongly suggesting the diagnosis of coeliac disease.
