Respiratory medicine consultation

Community Acquired Pneumonia. Initiate amoxicillin 1g orally three times daily. Can be discharged with follow up with GP in 48 hours. Sputum culture results to be forwarded to GP.

If significant improvement at follow-up visit to GP, continue antibiotic for 5 days. If no significant improvement, continue antibiotic treatment for 7 days. GP to reassess the diagnosis following sputum culture and sensitivity results.

Patient should be advised to return to the Emergency Department if they have a worsening of symptoms, especially any worsening in shortness of breath, confusion, light-headedness or worsening fever.
