1 Introduction

There are a number of environmental challenges that the world is facing and the ocean has a huge capacity to contribute to solving these issues. Throughout chapter 1, you will be introduced to global challenges and priorities from a local (Victoria), national (Australia) and international perspective. Building a sustainable blue economy requires collaboration and interdisciplinary research across all scales from local communities to a global scale. True sustainability can only be reached where the three pillars of sustainability (environmental, social, and economic) intersect.

Learning Goals

By the end of this chapter you should:

  • Have an understanding of local, national and international ocean challenges and priorities actions required to combat those challenges
  • Be able to define the three pillars (or three P’s) of sustainability, their interconnection, and how they can be used in sustainable management
  • Be able to evaluate scenario’s where the three pillars of sustainability have, (or haven’t), been used, and determine what steps are needed to ensure sustainability
