12 Introduction

Chapter 3 examines the importance of maintaining maritime sovereignty, safety and security. It introduces the law of the sea, the different maritime zones, and key aspects of marine safety and marine security. Science plays a critical role in supporting maritime sovereignty, safety, and security priorities through the development of a national (and global) integrated marine observing system. Monitoring factors including sea state, bathymetry, benthic surveys, and animal tracking over an extended time, allows more accurate predictions of weather and ocean conditions, climate change impacts, and impacts to biodiversity and ecosystems.

Learning Goals

By the end of this chapter you should:

  • Have an understanding of maritime jurisdiction including the different maritime zones and who has sovereign rights
  • Be able to explain and provide examples of maritime safety and security and why it is important
  • Have an understanding of Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) and its applications
