Using this guide

This OER is primarily written for Monash University Library staff, Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL) members, and other library staff working with OERs. We hope the guide will also be useful to Monash academics, educators, unit coordinators,  learning designers, and others in the educational realm.  It offers practical steps and advice based on our experiences to take a textbook (or other OER) from idea to publication.

The guide can be used in a linear or nonlinear fashion, or be adapted to suit a project’s needs. It provides tips, templates and checklists that have streamlined processes for the Monash Library OER service. It identifies the unique aspects of our program and starts with what we know best – the creation of OERs. Much of the text also generally supports the work around the adaptation of OER texts, but lacks detailed case studies, so it is neither nuanced nor comprehensive in this area.

We hope you will use what you need, and in the spirit of sharing and openness, and with attribution, re-use, re-purpose, adapt and redistribute this material.
