2 Introduction to Legal Research

Catherine Doughty and Theresa Buller

Learning Outcomes

After reading this chapter you will be able to:

  • understand the sources of legal information in Aotearoa New Zealand;
  • think critically about the legal information sources you may need for work or study;
  • develop a legal research strategy to help you find appropriate legal material for your work or study.

The ability to research and locate legal information is essential for law students and lawyers. Incomplete or inaccurate research can lead to lower marks in law school or professional embarrassment for practising lawyers.

This chapter helps you to develop these skills; later chapters will explain how to locate specific sources of legal information.
