42 Citing Reports and Government Documents

Papers and reports are cited using rule 5.4. Use this rule to cite government papers and reports as well as papers and reports from corporations and non-government organisations. These are often accessible online as PDF documents.

Citing reports and Government documents

To cite a paper or report, include the following information:

• the author or authors;
  • if the author is a corporation, government department or non-government organisation, use their English name, eg
    Ministry of Justice
    Amnesty International.
• the title in italics;
• the publisher;
  • omit the name of the publisher if it is the same as the author.
• the official citation if there is one;
• the date of publication.

When citing papers or reports, include all of the information that you have about the paper or report so that your reader can locate it if needed. If you are unable to find the author, official citation or date, omit that element from the citation.
