40 Citing Journal Articles
Melanie Lovich and Theresa Buller
Scholarly and practitioner journal articles are cited using rule 6.4 of NZLSG. You do not need to indicate whether you are citing an online or print version of a journal article.
Citing journal articles
When citing a journal article include the following information:
- name of the author or authors as written on the journal article;
- title of the journal article;
- the article title should be in quotation marks and should follow the formatting of the journal article title – italicise any case names or book titles as in the original journal article.
- the year the journal article was published;
- the year in round brackets unless the year is used as the volume number (which happens infrequently), then in square brackets – see rule 6.4.4;
- the volume of the journal in which the article was published;
- some journals do not have volume numbers, particularly if one volume is published each year.
- the issue number of the journal volume is usually omitted as redundant;
- most journals number pages consecutively throughout each volume’s issues, and so the issue number is redundant. For example, the first issue starts with page 1 and the final page is page 200, then the second issue starts with page 201 and so on throughout the volume.
- if each issue of a volume starts with page number 1, however, include the issue number alongside the volume number.
- the abbreviation of the journal title;
- generally you will find this on the article itself (check the second or third page), but if not, use the Cardiff Index to Legal Abbreviations to locate the abbreviation. The NZLSG does not use punctuation for abbreviations, eg NZULR rather than N.Z.U.L.R.
- the page on which the journal article starts.
