Books are an invaluable source of authoritative information for legal research. Books can provide you with:
- an in-depth understanding of a particular practice area, topic or concept;
- leading case references;
- key legislation references;
- references to other secondary sources, particularly journal articles and books.
Use your university library search to find books by title, author or topic. Use filters, such as publication date, to refine a large results list or use the advanced-search options. Consider currency and jurisdiction when selecting books to use. For example, while current texts are important for current research, historical research involves finding a book written closer to the time you are researching. Similarly, if the book is several years old and on a topic of law that is volatile and prone to change, ensure you use other sources of law, such as journal articles and online commentaries to identify more recent changes.
Some titles are available electronically as eBooks; however, publishers may set restrictions on the number of simultaneous users and the permitted amount of printing and downloading.
