5.3 Reinforcement measurement rules

The measurement rules for reinforcement are outlined in Section 8 of the ANZSMM, which provides standardized guidelines for quantifying reinforcement works in construction projects. The preamble notes and preamble items for reinforcement serve as key references for tenderers and quantity surveyors. The preamble notes direct tenderers to relevant specification sections containing reinforcement details such as material properties, fabrication, and installation requirements. The preamble item is typically given for bending schedules where not supplied free to the builder, and these schedules must state quantities of all reinforcement. This preamble item allows for an allowance (cost) to be made for the preparation of bending schedules, ensuring accurate documentation of reinforcement quantities, particularly when they are not provided to the builder at no additional cost.

Reinforcement bars are typically measured by weight and expressed in tonnes (t). Fabric reinforcement is measured by area and expressed in square metres (m²). Trench mesh, on the other hand, is measured by length and expressed in linear metres (m). For a comprehensive understanding of the detailed measurement rules, pricing methods, and definitions, readers are encouraged to refer directly to Section 8 of the ANZSMM.

When writing descriptions for reinforcement bars, for instance, the type and size of the bars must be clearly specified. In addition to the guidance provided in the ANZSMM, descriptions should reference the specification notes issued by the structural engineer. For example, a typical description for reinforcement in pad footings might read:

“Provide 20 mm diameter deformed mild steel reinforcement bars to AS 1302 in pad footings.”

For a more comprehensive understanding of the measurement procedures, pricing, and definitions, the authors encourage readers to refer Section 8 of the ANZSMM.
