Editors’ note
Te reo Māori is a nuanced language. Many words have multiple meanings, which vary depending on the context in which they are used. It is our intention to honour the integrity of the Māori language, but also to enable the key messages in this book to be accessible to those who are not familiar with the language. Readers are encouraged to refer to the glossary, wherein particular terms and concepts are explained within the context of this work. In addition, most terms are translated when they first appear in a chapter. However, the following terms appear frequently, and for this reason, we introduce them here. They will not be translated in each chapter but are included in the glossary. If readers wish to gain further understanding of a term, we suggest accessing Te Aka, the online Māori dictionary: https://maoridictionary.co.nz/
